Cairnbaan Hotel

Cairnbaan Hotel was built in 1901 to service the needs of the people building and later using the Crinan Canal. The Canal itself is nine miles long and stretches from Ardrishaig on the Clyde to Crinan and the sounds of Jura and later the Atlantic ocean, its purpose was to save the puffers trading the west coast of Scotland from having to sail around the Kintyre peninsular, a long and sometimes dangerous journey.

In recent times the hotel has had a most colourful history, once the roughest pub in Argyll, (it was once said that there was no crime or misdemeanour considered serious enough to be barred from the Cainrbaan hotel), with goats and chickens often sharing the bar.

Nowadays, after many years of care and investment, Cairnbaan is a delightful and stylish place attracting foreign and domestic tourists all year around. Famous guests have included The Princess Royal with Rear Admiral Lawrence and Bill and Hillary Clinton, and hardly a day goes around when someone or something of particular interest turns up.

Dinning at Cairnbaan is a relaxed affair with two main menus and daily specials available. As you would expect, local seafood is always available; from a simple bowl of huge mussels or a pint of prawns to a lobster Thermidor.

Cairnbaan has 12 lovely bedrooms with some over looking the canal. We have been awarded four stars with Visit Scotland, three stars with the AA, plus a rosette for the last five years. We are recommended by Michelin, The Good Hotel guide the Good Pub guide and we are members of Scotland’s Heritage Hotels and we are proud to be accepted as a founder member of The Seafood Trail.
