Royal An Lochan Celebrates 150 years

26 November 2015 at 12:50

2015 has been a big year for The Seafood Trail member, The Royal an Lochan Hotel in Tighnabruaich. Not only did Keith and Christine Bettis celebrate 5 years as owners of the hotel, the hotel itself enjoyed its 150th year of hospitality.

The Royal An Lochan Hotel in Tighnabruaich is situated on the Kyles of Bute overlooking the Isle of Bute. The building dates from 1865 and more recently it was converted from 21 bedrooms to 11 luxury en-suite bedrooms. Since 2006 the hotel has traded under the name of an Lochan. However, to combine the best qualities of both past and present, the hotel was re-named The Royal an Lochan in 2010 by the current owners Keith and Christine.

To mark the occasion this summer, Keith, Christine and staff took a step back in time to the year 1865 and dressed in Victorian costumes for a specially themed anniversary celebration. After being greeted with sparkling wine and canapés, guests were treated to a wonderful Victorian 6 course set dinner. To really get into the Victorian mood and set the atmosphere the staff donned Victorian garb which was great fun and made for some superb photos. Thanks to all who came along and joined in the spirit of the occasion.

The hotel may well be 150 years old, but Keith and Christine have their sights very much on today and the future. "The hotel's eco-friendly policy means that it is important to us to use local suppliers, support our local community and reduce our food miles and therefore our carbon foot print. We recycle all our waste products where possible and produce our own compost to fertilise our home grown flowers.By laundering our linen and towels in-house we can ensure our exacting standards are met and provide local employment and further reduce our road miles. Our short term plans for the hotel on reducing waste are simple and effective, these include the use of larger toiletry supplies in the bathrooms, therefore reducing the amount of 'one off' bottles used at present, and we will also replace all light bulbs where practical with energy efficient types. Our long-term aim is to install a wood chip fired boiler system, using a sustainable fuel source."
